Scholarships

The Department of Geosciences awards five scholarships and three educational enhancement awards annually to qualified undergraduate and graduate students.  (Application)  (PDF of descriptions)

The Paul H. Dunn Memorial Scholarship is awarded to one or more geology majors on the basis of the following criteria: (1) The student must have completed at least one semester at Mississippi State University; (2) The student must have a GPA of no less than 3.0 in all college work, and in all work in earth sciences; (3) The student must demonstrate promise as a future professional geologist (as determined by faculty in the department); (4) The student must be a positive influence and involved in departmental activities.

The Gordon Gulmon Memorial Scholarship is awarded by the faculty of the department on the basis of scholarship to the junior or senior majors with the best overall scholastic records. The overall records in earth science courses may be used in cases of multiple persons with identical overall records. It is possible for a given student to receive this award two times — once as a junior and once as a senior. The student must have an overall GPA of 3.0.

The John H. Richards, Jr. Annual Scholarship is awarded to a Geology major who is also a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. The applicants should be enrolled full-time with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Scholarship amount is $500/semester or $1000/year.  Scholarship is awarded on a year-to-year basis.

The Sistrunk Endowed Scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate or graduate geology major on the basis of the following criteria: (1) Must be a full-time student; (2) Must maintain a 3.0 GPA; (3) Must demonstrate leadership abilities.

The Mark Worthey Endowed Scholarship is awarded to a undergraduate Geosciences major on the basis of the following criteria: (1) Must be a full-time student; (2) Demonstrate hard work and need; (3) Be a sophomore, junior, or senior Geosciences major. Scholarship amount is $1000.

Educational Enhancement Awards

The Frederic F. Mellen Educational Enhancement Award is awarded to one or more geology majors who schedule the Summer Field Geology course for that specific summer. The amount may vary from $100 to $500, depending upon several factors and is awarded based on grades, promise as a future professional geologist, and needs of the student. Interested students should file an application with the department.

The Forrest W. Pace Educational Enhancement Award is awarded to one or more geology majors who schedule the Summer Field Geology course for that specific summer. The amount may vary from $100 to $500, depending upon several factors and is awarded based on grades, promise as a future professional geologist, and needs of the
student. Interested students should file an application with the department.

The Summer Geology Educational Enhancement Award is awarded during the summer term to a geology major.  The applicant must provide a narrative description of his/her need for summer support.  Consideration will be based upon the narrative describing specified circumstances of need for summer support.  This award may or may not be awarded yearly.  The award amount will based upon the applicant's need described.
